An American helicopter opened fire Tuesday at a gathering in northern Iraq, killing 16 people and wounding 14 others, a local police source said.
"Early in the morning, a U.S. helicopter struck a house in a rural area in the town of Dijla, 150 km north of Baghdad, killing 16 people, including seven women and three children, and wounding 14 others," Brigadier Jasim Muhammad, deputy police chief of Salahudin province, where the town located.
The incident took place when a U.S. helicopter first opened fire on three local farmers who were irrigating their farm in the suburb of Dijla town early in the morning, wounding two of them, Muhammad told Xinhua, citing reports from the town's local police.
The two wounded were transported to a nearby house where families of the neighbors in the rural area gathered, but they were surprised with another attack waged by the U.S. helicopters, destroying the house, killing and wounding some 30 of them, Muhammad said.
The U.S. military did not confirm the incident yet.
