Iran's newly-appointed chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, said Tuesday that the Islamic Republic will strongly pursue its nuclear policy, the official IRNA news agency reported.
"We will strongly pursue Iran's nuclear policy," said Jalili, who was heading a delegation in the Italian capital of Rome for talks later Tuesday with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana.
Jalili, who is also secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), said that there is a broad consensus on Iran's nuclear diplomacy by people from all walks of life.
Jalili was accompanied by Ali Larijani, representative of the Supreme Leader to the SNSC and former chief nuclear negotiator, and Mohammad Saeedi, deputy head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization for international affairs.
During its two-day stay in Rome, the Iranian nuclear delegation is also expected to meet senior Italian officials, IRNA reported.
The talks in Rome are seen as the continuation of those in Lisbon in June between Solana and Larijani, who announced his resignation over the weekend and was replaced by Jalili.
The West, especially the United States, believes Iran could make a nuclear bomb with its nuclear program while Tehran insists it is for peaceful purposes.
Solana is expected to submit a report to the six countries he is representing after talks with Larijani and his successor for the UN Security Council to discuss in November.
Iran could face further sanctions if it will not halt enrichment activities as the United States and some European Union nations, led by France, have been pressing for tougher penalties.
