United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has opened a new camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)'s eastern locality of Buhimba in North-Kivu region, to decongest other refugee camps in the region, sources said here on Tuesday.
A first group of 500 people was transferred from Ndosho camp, where some 1,000 refugees are living in deplorable conditions, to the new refugee camp in Buhimba.
The new site is constructed on a surface area of 28 hectares and has the capacity to host more than 10,000 refugees, who will benefit from decent basic services, notably clean water and hygiene installations.
There are more than 370,000 displaced persons in North-Kivu Province due to the prevailing state of insecurity there.
Buhimba refugee camp is the second after the one opened in Bulengo by UNHCR, apart from numerous others already existing in the bush around North-Kivu, according to reports.
