As a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Vietnam will have the right to take part in deciding significant issues relating to international peace, development and security, the country's top leaders have said.
With the membership, Vietnam will make practical contribution to keeping peace, while protecting national interests and helping protect legitimate interests of other nations. Vietnam will participate in the process of considering, proposing and deciding important issues about regional and international peace and security, said Nong Duc Manh, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee.
Vietnamese people want their country to continue to promote its role and status in international arena and make greater contribution to common works of the region and the world, local newspaper People on Wednesday quoted the leader as saying.
Vietnam's efforts for peace, national independence, renewal, industrialization and modernization have been highly appreciated by the international community, thus people in the world have foundations to believe that Vietnam will well hold the position of great responsibility of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2008-2009 term, he said.
With the membership, Vietnam can make direct contribution to one of most important works of the UN -- maintaining international security and peace via peacefully solving disputes, conducting reconstruction and development in post-conflict time, and eliminating such threats as terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, said Vietnamese State President Nguyen Minh Triet.
The government is considering the possibility of participating in UN's peacekeeping operations which are suitable to its conditions and capabilities, Triet said.
In the 2008-2009 period, Vietnam will focus on well fulfilling tasks of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and keeping on realizing Millennium Development Goals, especially accelerating poverty reduction and educational generalization, improving health of mothers and children, controlling diseases and protecting environment.
With 183 out of 190 votes, the UN General Assembly on Oct. 16 elected Vietnam non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2008-2009 term.
