Togo's main opposition party, Union of Forces for Change (UFC), which was ranked at second position during the recent legislative elections, may join the government " but not at whatever conditions," local media reported Thursday.
"UFC is ready to joint a government of national unity, but not at whatever conditions. These conditions must be clearly defined," Patrick Lawson, UFC's third vice-president said Wednesday.
UFC garnered 27 out of 81 seats in parliament, compared to 50 won by the ruling Rally for the Togolese People (RPT), according to provisional results issued by the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI). The Action Committee for Renewal (CAR) led by Yawovi Agboyibo, the current opposition prime minister, won four seats.
Alluding to possible discussions with the government, Lawson said they "must be clear" without being "one-sided." "We must discuss as equal partners," he said.
The Togolese constitutional court is expected in the next few days to proclaim the final results of the legislative elections held on Oct. 14, after which the head of state Faure Gnassingbe will embark on discussions aimed at nominating a new prime minister and government.
