Over 150 people have been quizzed in connection with Monday's pre-dawn attack on the Sri Lanka Air Force base at the north-central town of Anuradhapura, the police said on Thursday.
Anuradhapura's Deputy Inspector General of Police Jayantha Jayasinghe said that the people quizzed were the residents living around the air base. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) carried out the daring attack on the air base destroying eight Sri Lanka Air Force aircraft, the government said.
Twenty one rebels and 14 security forces personnel died in the attack. Jayasinghe said investigators are looking for clues as to how the rebels entered the heavily guarded air base.
This was the second attack by the rebels in the holy city of Anuradhapura in the island's long drawn-out separatist armed conflict.
In 1985 the LTTE carried out an attack in the city, killing 146 civilians. Monday's attack has prompted the authorities to put in place special security operations in the district.
A new military overall commander's position was created in the Sri Lanka Army to co-ordinate the action of all three armed forces and the police at Anuradhapura.
