UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon expressed deep concern on Thursday about the situation in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as a result of fighting.
"The secretary-general is deeply concerned about the increased displacement, human suffering, and sexual violence" in the province, Ban's press office said in a statement.
Continued insecurity is complicating efforts by the United Nations and its partners to provide for the basic humanitarian needs of civilians caught up in the conflict, the statement said.
The UN chief called upon "all belligerents to ensure total and unrestricted access of humanitarian actors to civilians affected by the conflict, in accordance with international humanitarian law, " it said.
Urging all dissidents to join a process of integrating into the national army "immediately and without conditions," Ban also called upon the government to ensure the protection of all civilians in the region.
