Finnish President Tarja Halonen and the cabinet committee on foreign and security policy decided on Friday to send 40 peacekeepers to Chad and the Central African Republic as part of a European Union (EU) operation in the two countries.
The EU operation is intended to support efforts to improve the humanitarian and security situation in Sudan and to create conditions for the return of refugees.
The EU operation supports the activities of the U.N. in the area and is part of the measures by the international community to resolve the crisis in the western Sudanese region of Darfur.
At a joint meeting, Halonen and the cabinet committee also considered it important for the country to continue its involvement in efforts aimed at stabilizing Afghanistan.
Finland intends to participate in 2008 in the activities of the Operational Mentoring and Liaison Teams (OMLT) that are training Afghan forces. The OMLTs play a central role in training Afghanistan's own army. Source: Xinhua
