General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nong Duc Manh and visiting Premier of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Yong Il said Saturday their exchange of visits helped bring the bilateral ties to a new height.
When paying a courtesy call on Manh on Saturday afternoon, Kim said he highly appreciated the party leader's visit to the DPRK from Oct. 16-18, which helped further promote the traditional relations between the two countries.
Manh said the DPRK premier's trip also helped bring the ties to a new height. Earlier, Manh and Kim reviewed the development of traditional friendship and relations between the two countries.
Before paying a courtesy call on Manh, Kim held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung. The two prime ministers also witnessed the signing of memorandums of understanding on culture, arts, science and education exchanges between the two governments in the 2008-2010 period, and on scientific and technical cooperation between the two agriculture ministries.
Vietnam and the DPRK established diplomatic ties in 1950. They have signed a number of treaties and agreements, including an agreement on culture cooperation in 1957, an agreement on scientific and technical cooperation in 1958, a treaty on friendship and cooperation in 1961, an agreement on trade and maritime in 1962 and an agreement on medical assistance in 1966.
