The Sudanese government strongly denounced on Sunday an attempt by a French non-governmental organization to abduct and traffic more than 100 Sudanese children from refugees camps in eastern Chad.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry, in a statement, expressed its " grave anxiety and condemnation" over the attempt aborted by the Chadian authorities.
The ministry described the attempt as "flagrant violation of the principles of the international law and the charters of human rights, particularly the Hague Convention on adoption of Children. "
It believed that the French organization involved in the attempt"had hidden objectives for making these heinous actions such as selling these children or parts of their bodies," said the statement.
Highly appreciating the Chadian authorities for thwarting the attempt, the Sudanese ministry called on the French government "to take the necessary and decisive actions and procedure to prohibit French organizations from doing such ugly acts in accordance with the French and the International Laws."
The Chadian government announced on Saturday that the Chadian police arrested on Thursday nine French people as they were preparing to fly more than 100 children to France without official authorization.
Those arrested included Zoe's Ark, head of the group which said earlier this year that it intended to bring orphans from Sudan's violent Darfur region to France for adoption.
Chadian Interior Minister Ahmat Mahamat Bachir said the nine French citizens were arrested at Abeche airport in eastern Chad, near the Darfur border, and were being held in police custody in the town.
"They'll be spending several nights here," he said, adding that not all of the children were orphans.
