Twenty-three people have been killed and 20 others injured in the past month in grass-roots election-related violent incidents, said the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday.
The Barangay (village) and Sangguniang Kabataan (youth-council) elections were held simultaneously on Monday, in which more than 51.3 million registered voters are expected to troop to 238,486 clustered precincts throughout the country to elect 671,920 village and youth officials in 41,995 barangays from among more than 1.3 million candidates.
PNP were put on the highest security alert on Sunday ahead of the election, placing 4,355 villages or 10.3 percent of villages nationwide, under its watch list.
PNP figures showed that as of 9 a.m. Monday, 23 people have been killed, 20 others were wounded while one was missing in election-related violent cases nationwide since the start of the election period on Sept. 29, the Philippine ABS-CBN TV reported on Monday.
In its nationwide tally, PNP said that fatalities in election- related violence included five candidates for village chairman, two candidates for village councilor, seven incumbent village officials, three other government officials and six civilians.
On the other hand, those wounded include four candidates for the village top post, one candidate for village councilor, six incumbent village officials and nine civilians. A candidate for village chairman remained missing following his abduction.
In its tally, PNP also showed that 325 people were arrested for violating the gun ban, leading to the confiscation of 284 firearms, eight explosives and 52 assorted deadly weapons.
