Myanmar has agreed to an appointment of a first ambassador of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to the country following the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations in April this year, Wednesday's official newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported.
The assigned DPRK ambassador Kim Sok Chol had served as Deputy Director-General of Asia and Pacific Department of DPRK Foreign Ministry, the report said.
More than three months after Myanmar and DPRK resumed such ties, Myanmar named its ambassador to China U Thein Lwin concurrently as first ambassador to DPRK.
Last month, Myanmar Deputy Foreign Minister U Kyaw Thu visited Pyongyang, initiating an agreement with his DPRK counterpart Kim Yong Il on consultation between the two countries' foreign ministries to develop bilateral ties.
Myanmar and DPRK broke off diplomatic relations on Nov. 4, 1983after DPRK agents were charged with masterminding a deadly bomb attack on a visiting South Korean government delegation, led by then president Chun Doo Hwan on Oct. 9.
The bomb blast killed 17 members of Chun's entourage including four cabinet ministers, injuring 17 others. In the incident, four Myanmar officials also died.
