Kazakh Defense Minister Danial Akhmetov said Tuesday that the Kazakh Defense Ministry has set up a department for Caspian navy to beef up the country's fleet on the Caspian Sea, according to reports reaching here from Astana.
The new department will start to operate next January and the Kazakh Defense Ministry is negotiating with companies from Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and France on navy equipment purchases such as warships, the Interfax news agency quoted Akhmetov as saying.
The defense minister said Kazakhstan will also build necessary supporting facilities along the coast to lay a foundation for the Kazakh fleet in the future.
In May, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said that the Kazakh military force will focus on beefing up navy on the Caspian Sea and the military infrastructure construction in the coming years.
