The Philippine National Police (PNP)has been placed on its highest alert effective Wednesday morning for the traditional commemoration of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day on Nov. 1-2, reports said.
In his directive, Chief Superintendent Silverio Alarcio, head of the directorate for operations, asked police to "continue providing security to vital installations, economic key points, places of convergence, and transportation terminals," the Philippine Daily Inquirer said in a report posted on its website.
The directive was issued on the eve of All Saints' Day in anticipation that millions of Filipinos would go to provinces and cemeteries in Metro Manila. Most of the policemen are deployed to the country's transportation hot spots and cemeteries.
On Tuesday, the PNP downgraded its full alert status to heightened alert, except for the National Capital Region, after the village and youth polls held simultaneously on Monday.
Tensions in the Philippines were heightened after an explosion rocked a shopping mall in Metro Manila on Oct. 19, killing 11 people and injuring scores of others. The investigation on the cause of the blast has not be concluded yet.
