India and Germany have signed a number of agreements in the field of science and technology, in a bid to upgrade scientific cooperation to a new level, the Indian Express reported Wednesday.
The agreements were signed in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel here Tuesday night.
These included setting up of an Indo-German science and technology center, launching a Science Express train, cooperation in marine sciences, a memorandum of understanding for cooperation between the postal departments and an agreement on "mutual protection of classified information" among others.
"India and Germany reaffirm their commitment to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership," said a joint statement on the further development of strategic and global partnership between the two countries.
During their meeting, the two leaders discussed a wide range of bilateral, regional and global issues including the United Nations reforms, terrorism, energy security and cooperation in the Doha round of multilateral trade negotiations and a new evolving mechanism to combat climate change.
The two countries also set an ambitious trade target of achieving bilateral trade worth 20 billion euro by 2010.
Merkel arrived here Monday for a four-day visit to India. The two leaders said enhancing business and technological cooperation was the keystone of growing relationship between the two countries. Around 30 top business honchos representing big brands like Airbus, Siemens are accompanying Merkel.
On Wednesday, Merkel left for Mumbai where the delegation will meet captains of Indian industry.
