Afghan troops backed by NATO forces launched an operation in the north central Badghis province Wednesday, capturing 17 Taliban insurgents including their commander, a statement of Afghanistan Defense Ministry said.

"In the operation launched this morning, 17 terrorists including their commander Mullah Abdul Qayum were captured," the statement said.

Two more militants, according to the statement, were killed in the operation.

A large number of arms and ammunition were also seized from the possession of the insurgents, it added.

Taliban fighters have yet to make any comment.

More than 5,400 people, mostly insurgents, have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.
