The Philippines still lags behind its peers in the Southeast Asian region although it achieved some progress in economic competitiveness, said a survey by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on its website Thursday.
The Philippines moved up to 71st, with a score of 3.99, in the Global Competitiveness Index rankings 2007-2008 from the 75th place in the 2006-2007 rankings.
However, the country came behind its neighbors including Malaysia (21st), Thailand (28th), Indonesia (54th) and Vietnam (68th).
The rankings, which included 131 countries, were calculated from both publicly available data and the Executive Opinion Survey, a comprehensive annual survey conducted by the WEF together with its network of Partner Institutes in the countries covered by a report.
The survey was designed to capture a broad range of factors affecting an economy's business climate.
The United States topped the overall rankings, followed by Switzerland and Denmark. Others on the top were Sweden, Germany, Finland, Singapore, Japan, United Kingdom and the Netherlands, respectively.
