Mongolian Prime Minister Miegombyn Enkhbold on Monday submitted his resignation letter to the State Great Hural (parliament) of Mongolia.
Enkhbold said in the letter that under the current political situation, he could not continue to fulfill his responsibility.
Enkhbold decided to step down after he was defeated in the October election for the chairman of the country's largest and also ruling party, the MPRP, by Sanj Bayar, whom the party's congress said should serve as the prime minister.
The MPRP was established in 1921 and now has more than 160,000 members. It holds 39 seats in the 76-seat parliament and formed a coalition government after Enkhbold was elected prime minister in January 2006.
