Brazilian police arrested Thursday eight people allegedly involved in a scheme to sell ecstasy and other synthetic drugs in the capital.
The eight suspects were aged between 18 to 31, most of whom were university students. Another alleged gang member Thiago Castilho Gama, 24, was already under arrest for theft.
According to the police, the leader of the gang was Bruno Pompeu D'Urso, 18, who lived in Lagoa district, one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Rio.
The suspects were charged with distributing synthetic drugs, like ecstasy and LSD, to youngsters in the south of the capital, as well as selling other drugs in local market.
Also Thursday, Minas Gerais state police arrested five university students for drug trafficking in the capital city of Belo Horizonte. The police apprehended 5,000 ecstasy pills and 500LSD microdots with the group.
Rio police has been waging a series of campaigns to battle synthetic drug trafficking in the capital region. On Wednesday, they arrested Marcel Dias Fernandes, 26, the main drug lord in the southern zone. He allegedly sold an average of 400 pills per week in the region.
Last week, another five ecstasy dealers were arrested. Three of them were charged with selling drugs at a party held in the municipality of Itaborai, Rio's metro region, where a 17-year-old boy died of drug abuse on Oct. 28.
