Queen Elizabeth II and thousands of war veterans led the country in commemorating the sacrifice made by Britain's war dead at the main Remembrance in London ceremony on Sunday.

The Queen laid the first wreath of poppies on behalf of the nation and senior Royals followed, including Prince William for the first time, then Prime Minister Gordon Brown and opposition party leader David Cameron.

Other remembrance events were also taking place around the country and in Afghanistan and Iraq.

At the London ceremony, thousands of veterans, many elderly and frail, marched past the memorial in Whitehall to pay their respects.

Prime Minister Brown said that people would be remembering people who had died in various wars.

"As a nation, we are remembering more than perhaps ten years ago, 20 years ago, just how much we owe to people who give their lives, and young lives, for the service of our country," he said.

Former Prime Ministers, Tony Blair, Baroness Thatcher and John Major, also paid their respects.

This year Remembrance on Sunday falls exactly 89 years after the ending of the First World War. Britain's oldest war veteran, 111-year-old Henry Allingham, laid a wreath in St. Omer, northern France.

Not only the First and Second World Wars were being remembered but also present conflicts in which Britain is fighting.

Britain has suffered 83 military fatalities in Afghanistan and 169 in Iraq since hostilities began in the two countries.
