German security personnel detained a man in his twenties who had shouted protests and tried to approach German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy at their joint visit to a school in Berlin on Monday.
Before being detained, the man, with his fists raised and shouting comments about Germany being "a police state", pushed his way to within several meters of the two leaders who were visiting the Romain Roland Secondary School in western Berlin to highlight the importance of ethnic integration, German media reported.
German police said they would not characterize the incident as an attack. The man is said to try to protest a highly controversial law passed by the German parliament last week that toughens telecommunications surveillance in Germany in a bid to combat crimes and terrorism.
Sarkozy, accompanied by Prime Minister Francois Fillon and other members of his cabinet, is visiting Berlin for the joint Franco-German cabinet sessions which take place twice a year. The theme of the talks this time is the integration of immigrants. Source: Xinhua
