Germany and France will support tougher sanctions against Iran if Tehran fails to comply with demands to halt uranium enrichment, the leaders of the two countries said Monday.

Speaking after a joint German-Franco cabinet session in Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that if Iran fails to respond satisfactorily, sanctions would have to be discussed in the United States.

"In the substance, we're on the same wavelength," said visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Both Merkel and Sarkozy discussed Iran's nuclear issues with U.S. President George W. Bush during their separate visits to the United States over the past week.
