Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper Wednesday appointed a university president to head the probe into allegations against former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.
David Lloyd Johnston, president of the University of Waterloo, will be the third party investigator looking into allegations that Mulroney took bribery from Karlheinz Schreiber, a German-Canadian businessman.
There would be a public inquiry into the case after preliminary probe led by Johnston.
Mulroney, in office from 1984 to 1993, allegedly took 300, 000 Canadian dollars (315,000 U.S. dollars) in cash from Schreiber shortly after he left office.
Schreiber, who is fighting deportation back to Germany, said in an affidavit that the money was given to Mulroney to enlist the former prime minister's help for his businesses.
He also said a Mulroney adviser had asked him to transfer funds in connection with Air Canada's 1988 purchase of Airbus planes to a lawyer based in Switzerland.
Mulroney, 68, said Tuesday he welcomed Harper's decision to launch a full public inquiry. "... I have done nothing wrong and have absolutely nothing to hide," he said. Source: Xinhua
