A gas pipeline explosion in eastern Saudi Arabia killed 28 workers, the Saudi national oil company Aramco said on Sunday.
Aramco attributed the death to the fire caused by a gas leak in the pipeline, some 30 km from its Hawiyah gas plant.
The company said in a statement that "The fire broke out while contractor workers where linking a new pipe" to the pipeline during maintenance late Saturday.
According to the statement, 28 workers, including five Aramco workers, died in the fire, which was put out on early Sunday.
Saudi Aramco located on the country's east coast is the world's largest oil producer. The Hawiyah plant produces 310,000 barrels of ethane and natural gas liquids daily. Source: Xinhua
