An earthquake with magnitude of 5.4 hit Sumatra Island on Monday morning, and there was no report of damages or casualty, said the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.
The quake struck at 01:46 a.m. (1846 GMT, Sunday) with the epicenter at 7 kilometers southeast of Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra province at the island and at 105 kilometers in depth, an official of the agency said.
Twenty-three people were killed in the province and the nearby province of Bengkulu after a strong quake hit Bengkulu province in mid-September this year.
In December 2004, over 170,000 people were killed in the Aceh province in northern tip of Sumatra island after a tsunami triggered by powerful quake devastated coastal areas the province and other countries in the Southeast Asia.
Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone, so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet that cause frequent seismic and volcanic movement. Source: Xinhua
