Canada introduced on Monday tougher legislation aimed at cracking down on violent youth crime.

The proposed amendments to the Youth Criminal Justice Act would toughen sentences for young people to provide "meaningful consequences" for committing violent acts, said Justice Minister Rob Nicholson.

The amendments would also give judges more power to detain young people considered a danger to the public, before putting them to trial.

Nicholson said a comprehensive review of the Youth Criminal Justice Act would be conducted next year, aimed at reforming the legislation.

The Conservative government vowed to toughen laws on youth crime as well as drug crime when it came to office in January 2006.
