The party of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa Delgado has won 80 of the 130 seats in the nation's Constituent Assembly, Ecuador's Supreme Electoral Tribunal said on Monday.
His political movement, Pais, scored the largest win in the Sept. 30 poll, the tribunal said on its web page. It was followed by the Patriotic Society Party led by former president Lucio Guiterrez, which won 18 seats, it said.
The third largest winner, the PRIAN party led by banana magnate Alvaro Noboa, took eight seats.
The assembly, which will write a new constitution for the country, is scheduled to meet on Nov. 29 in the western coast city of Montecristi.
The counting process for the vote had been much delayed by calls for a recount in Guayas and Pichincha which have the largest concentration of population.
Correa has called on the assembly to dissolve congress and says the new constitution will take power away from the nation's traditional political elite.
Correa, who was sworn in at the beginning of 2007, also wants two consecutive four-year terms for president, which is not allowed under the current constitution. Source: Xinhua
