A moderate earthquake measured 5.1 on the Richter scale Tuesday shook Iran's southwestern province of Khuzestan, injured 30 pupils, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The quake hit the town of Qlaetel at 8:50 a.m. (0520 GMT) local time. According to Shapoor Rstami, director general of critical instance in Khuzestan, 30 students were injured while they were rushing out of their classes when the quake came, and they were immediately sent to the hospital for medical treatment, said the report.

Iran locates astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and people can feel at least one tremor everyday in the country. In 2003, a deadly earthquake hit the country's southeastern city of Bam and killed 31,000 people.
