German Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged all sides in Lebanon to conduct dialogue on presidential election, the German Foreign Ministry press office said on Tueday.
According to a press release issued by the office, Steinmeier and Ban Ki-moon had a telephone conversation on the current situation in Lebanon Monday evening, and their exchange of views "focused on the forthcoming presidential elections."
Both leaders were concerned that a few days before the end of President Lahoud's term in office, the conditions for the election of a new head of state had yet to be created.
"They agreed that the continuing uncertainty bore the risk of new political instability in Lebanon and the region," said the press release.
Both politicians called on all sides in Lebanon to use the time remaining for "constructive dialogue" so that "the elections could take place in free self-determination."
They voiced their support for the ongoing international mediation efforts and urged Lebanon's neighbors to preserve the country's sovereignty.
