Cuba is scheduled to hold elections for seats in the national and provincial assemblies on Jan. 20, 2008, the country's state television reported on Tuesday.
The date for the voting, which is held every five years, was set according to a decree signed by the country's acting leader Raul Castro, who read the ruling on state television.
Some 12,000 delegates of the 169 municipal assemblies, elected in late October, will cast ballots to choose members of the provincial and national assemblies, who will serve for a five-year term.
The National Assembly will elect a new Council of State, which consists of 31 members. .
Current President of the National Assembly Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada earlier said Fidel Castro, who has been recovering from an operation, fully qualified for reelection as the leader of the council.
By law, anyone aged 16 or older is eligible to vote.
