Greenpeace held a protest against the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest on Wednesday in the federal capital of Brasilia, mid-western Brazil.

At Tres Poderes square, the environmentalists of the non-governmental organization Greenpeace asked for a "concrete commitment" from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the battle against global warming and the deforestation in the Amazon forest, the largest rainforest in the planet.

The signs "Save the Amazon, save the planet's climate," and the balloons carrying the symbol for carbon dioxide, CO2, the gas mainly responsible for the greenhouse effect, which affects the world's climate.

The environmentalists also took a box with ashes representing the vegetation destroyed by illegal fires lit to expand the agricultural area in the Amazon region that have contributed to climate change.
