Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili will hand in his resignation Sunday to enable him to start his election campaign, the president's spokesman said Thursday.
Following his resignation, Saakashvili will launch his official election campaign to run for a second term in the Jan. 5 elections. The parliament speaker will act as the head of state.
Under Georgian law, an election has to be held no earlier than 40 days before and no later than 45 days after the early resignation of the president. Therefore, for the declared elections to take place on schedule the incumbent president has to resign between Nov. 21 and Nov. 25.
