Two toddlers were killed and 26 others injured, and many buildings collapsed after two strong quakes of 6.7 and 6.8 magnitude hit West Nusa Tenggara province on Sunday night and Monday morning, the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency said on Monday.
Spokesman of the agency in the province Nyoman Cinra said that two toddlers, five and 10, died because of the quake in Dompu regency. "Two toddlers were dead and some buildings collapsed and were damaged," he told Xinhua on phone from the regency.
An official of the agency in Jakarta, Adam Malik said that currently 26 people suffered serious injuries.
The main shock of 6.7 magnitude struck at 23:02 Jakarta time (1602 GMT Sunday) with epicenter at 50 kilometers southwest Raba town of the province and at 50 kilometers in depth, the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.
Three hours later, the 6.8-magnitude tremor that was potential for tsunami followed the main shock, the agency said.
Twenty-three people were killed and thousands of buildings were destructed in September after a 7.9-magnitude quake hit Bengkulu province in Sumatra Island of Indonesia.
In December 2004, over 170,000 people were killed in the Aceh province after a tsunami triggered by a strong quake devastated coastal areas the province and other countries in the Southeast Asia.
Indonesia is laid at a vulnerable zone, so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire" where two continental plates, stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia, meet that cause frequent volcanic movements. Source: Xinhua
