At least one prisoner was killed and 14 others injured in a clash between rival gangs in the Neza-Bordo Jail near Mexico City, the nation's State Security Agency said on Sunday.
The clash occurred at 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday with prisoners using fists, knives and guns to fight in the prison in Nezahualcoyotl, which is part of the Mexico City conurbation.
Some 700 security officers entered the jail at midnight and managed to bring the riot to an end by 3:45 a.m. on Sunday.
The dead inmate, 35, was identified as a convicted car thief.
The injured prisoners were transferred to the state's Gustavo Baz hospital during the early hours of Sunday morning.
The jail also sent another 20 prisoners who had taken part in the fight to other different jails to avoid further conflict.
Prisoners' families attributed the clash to overcrowding. The jail was built for 1,600 prisoners but currently houses more than 3,000.
At least 10 prisoners have died so far this year in the jail in riots or individual fights.
