Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) said on Monday that the policies adopted in the current term of President Mahmoud Abbas increased the divisions among the Palestinian people.
"Abbas' policies are dangerous and will not bring any good for the Palestinian people. Instead, they increase the divisions among the Palestinians and destroy freedoms and serves no one except the Israeli occupation," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoom said in a written statement.
Terming the current Abbas regime as "the worst in the Palestinian history," the Hamas spokesman held Abbas responsible for Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip, which has been under a tight Israeli blockade since this June.
"In Abbas' term, there was an internal fighting that killed many people and the freedoms were depressed," Barhoom said, referring to the days of infighting in June which led to Hamas takeover of Gaza in the end.
"The political coexistence was destroyed and the policy of one party was imposed... the rights and principles were given up and there is coordination with the occupation against the resistance," Barhoom argued.
Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in mid June after days of fierce fighting with pro-Abbas security forces, which was routed and ousted.
In the wake of the Gaza "coup," defined by Abbas, the Hamas-led government was sacked and a caretaker government was installed in the West Bank according to a series of presidential decrees, engendering the de facto split among the Palestinians.
However, Barhoom deemed that the current situation was a result of the American and Israeli plans, which would end with the Annapolis peace conference due on Tuesday.
