Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement on Monday criticized activities launched by several Palestinian factions against the upcoming Annapolis peace conference.
Fehmi al-Za'arier, a Fatah spokesman, said the public conference held in Gaza on Monday were meant to "weaken the Palestinian negotiators" at the U.S.-hosted international peace conference which will kick off in Annapolis, Maryland on Tuesday.
The Hamas-sponsored conference was "an attempt by Hamas to restore its dignity by using Annapolis since it is a point of differences," he said.
For Fatah, Annapolis conference "aims at launching a new negotiating process to maintain the national principles," al-Za'arier added.
Hamas, the Gaza ruler, sponsored the anti-Annapolis conference in Gaza City at noon on Monday in opposition to the "much-touted" Annapolis conference proposed by U.S. President George W. Bush in July in a bid to revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks after a seven-year deadlock.
The Islamic Jihad (Holy War), the Popular Resistance Committees(PRC) and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine -General Command joined the conference in addition to academics.
Hamas rules the Gaza Strip since mid June after defeating security forces of rival Fatah movement.
