Chilean President Michelle Bachelet on Monday signed an anti-crime accord placing the interior ministry in charge of both the armed and civilian police forces.
The accord also established a new department in the ministry to prevent crime and offer support for victims.
It also offers tax breaks to organizations dedicated to reducing drug or alcohol consumption and commits the government to publishing a weekly report on its anti-crime policies.
"The agreements are more than just a photo opportunity, an image or a memorable phrase," Bachelet said, "what motivates us is the part that will last long into the future."
