France on Monday expressed hopes that the upcoming Annapolis Mideast conference could contribute to building a peaceful and safe Palestinian state.
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner will attend the conference that is set to open in Annapolis, Maryland on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Pascale Andreani told the press.
France supports an "independent, sovereign, viable, democratic and peaceful" Palestinian state, said the spokeswoman. Israel, at the same time, should be guaranteed a reliable and safe border, she said.
France planed to hold a donors' conference in Paris in Mid-December following the meeting in the United States to win political and financial support for a Palestinian state, said the spokeswoman.
The Annapolis conference is part of a new round of U.S. efforts to resume Israeli-Palestinian peace talks seven years after the last one with an aim to create a Palestinian state by January, 2009 when Bush's second term ends.
Nearly 50 countries and international organizations will attend the conference.
