The German Embassy in Malaysia has launched a coffee-table book in celebration of five decades of productive Malaysian-German relations, local media reported on Tuesday.

The 256-page hardcover book in full color traces the development and current state of all facets of the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Titled 50 Years of Malaysian-German Relations: Portraits of Friendship -- Then and Now, it was sponsored by German companies in Malaysia, which contributed 160,000 ringgit (47,761 U.S. dollars).

The book gives a forum for a variety of voices, German companies here and individuals, both Malaysia and Germans, German Ambassador to Malaysia Herbert Jess said.

The book project had unearthed a large treasure chest of projects, impressions and adventures that made up 50 years of a multi-faceted joint Malaysian-German history, he said.

"But the thing that strikes me as most important is Malaysia's and Malaysians' ability to make the best of opportunities for international exchange and co-operation," the New Straits Times quoted Jess as saying.

Malaysian Foreign Ministry parliamentary secretary Ahmad Shabery Cheek applauded the initiative and said it symbolized the bond of friendship developed over half a century of diplomatic relations.

The strong relations were further underpinned by both countries' economic links, he said.
