An explosion broke out Tuesday in a gold mine in southern Ecuador, killing at least one miner and trapping some 60 others underground, officials said.
The blast occurred at a mine in the village of Ponce Enriquez, 370 km southwest of Quito. The number of injured miners has not been determined, said Interior Minister Gustavo Larrea.
"It was an explosion in the mine. We still don't know the cause, and the injured are being taken to Machala," Larrea told Channel 1 television.
The minister said rescue work for the trapped miners would begin soon.
The mine was run by a local cooperative with "limited safety," he said.
