Indonesian Army Chief of Staff General Djoko Santoso has been nominated as the sole candidate to replace the outgoing armed forces commander, a legislator said Tuesday.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has recommended Santoso in his official letter to the House of Representatives.
"We welcome the president's choice. (Santoso) is the right choice among other possible candidates," Yuddi Chrisnandi, a member of the House commission overseeing defense, was quoted by leading news website Detikcom as saying.
"Compared with others, he is the youngest. His retirement age will not come until 2010, while other candidates will retire next year."
According to the defense law, the military chief candidates must be the chief of staff or the former chief of staff of either force.
There is an unwritten law in the country that the post is held in turn by the three forces, and this term comes to the army.
Yuddi said the commission is eager to hold a hearing with Santoso before the plenary session on Dec. 8.
