Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf began farewell visits to various military headquarters in Rawalpindi Tuesday ahead of expectedly doffing army uniform on Nov. 28.
"General Musharraf, in line with the military traditions of paying farewell calls, visited the Joint Staff Headquarters. He was presented a guard of honor," the official Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
The 64-year-old general met with chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majid and director generals of the headquarters.
They also exchanged souvenirs, the APP said in the report.
Musharraf, who was to resign his military Wednesday, has been the chief of army staff since Oct. 7, 1998. He became president in 2001 and was re-elected in the presidential election on Oct. 6, 2007.
Musharraf, in a move to push for a transition in Pakistan from military rule to civilian presidency, has promised to shed his uniform before taking oath as a civilian president.
Musharraf's re-election was once challenged by other candidates filing petitions in the Supreme Court, which delayed the announcement of Musharraf's victory in the Oct. 6 presidential polls until recently.
Musharraf would doff his uniform in an impressive ceremony on Wednesday, one day ahead of the fixed date for him to be sworn in as president.
Vice Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani, 55, will take over the command of the armed forces as the new army chief Wednesday.
