Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Tuesday that the fight against corruption will continue as long as he is still in command of the country.
"Corruption eradication remains a priority," said Susilo, who promised to personally lead the anti-graft campaign when he took office in 2004.
He called on law enforcement officials to target those who embezzled state money during the massive bailout of ailing Indonesian banks that cost the country a disastrous loss of about 600 trillion rupiah (64 billion U.S. dollars) in the wake of the 1997/98 financial crisis.
"The fugitives, who fled abroad bringing Indonesian money and assets, must be captured and forced to return their ill-gotten money," the president said.
Susilo made the remarks in a ceremony to inaugurate the new compound of the anti-money laundering agency PPATK here.
He called on the police, the prosecutors and the PPATK to immediately take decisive actions once there is a corruption case or suspected money laundering.
"We must win the battle early on," said the president.
