Iran's supreme court has ordered anew investigation into the death of Iranian-Canadian photographer Zahra Kazemi in a Tehran prison four years ago, a judiciary spokesman said on Tuesday.
The supreme court found the initial court that had ruled in the case not competent to investigate the case, Ali Reza Jamshidi told reporters.
"The case has been returned to a competent court which, God willing, will investigate the case and give the final decision," the judiciary spokesman said.
Zahra Kazemi, a Canadian freelance journalist of Iranian origin, died of brain hemorrhage on July 11, 2003, while under detention. She had been arrested several days earlier on the accusation of illegally taking pictures at Evin prison in Tehran.
Kazemi's family and lawyers have repeatedly claimed that her death was the result of an "intentional murder."
Iranian authorities initially said Kazemi died of a stroke, but a presidential committee under the then government found that she died of a fractured skull and brain hemorrhage caused by a "physical attack."
But the more conservative judiciary at the time rejected the presidential finding and later claimed in a statement that Kazemidied in custody from an accidental fall after her blood pressure dropped during a hunger strike.
