Polish Defense Minister Bogdan Klich said Poland will have to send one more shift of its soldiers to Iraq with the task to close down Poland's mission there next year.
"I hope that we will conclude Poland's military presence there by autumn 2008," the minister told Rzeczpospolita daily.
Poland currently has about 900 troops stationed in Iraq.
Klich said earlier that the decision on the Poland's troop withdrawal had been received with understanding by the Americans. He told TVN24 news station on Monday that Polish prime minister and foreign minister had already held consultations with the U.S. side.
"I personally have spoken with U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on the issue ... He has only asked if our pull out from Iraq will be accompanied by any kind of changes in our Afghan mission," Klich said.
He added that he assured Gates that Poland's contingent in Afghanistan will be maintained at least at the present level of 1,200 troops.
