Gunmen of al-Qaida in Iraq organization attacked a Shiite village in Diyala province northeast of Baghdad, killing at least 11 people and wounding five others, a provincial police source said on Saturday.
"Dozens of al-Qaida militants launched series of mortar and machinegun attacks overnight and Saturday morning on the village of Dwailiyah near the town of Maqdadiyah, 100 km northeast of Baghdad," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Adnan al-Bawi, the chieftain of the al-Bawi tribe in the village was among the killed people, the source said.
On Saturday morning, the tension is very high in the area as the clash continue between the attackers and the villagers, he said.
Several houses were damaged by the attacks, he added.
