Thousands of Thai people dressed in yellow shirts with a specially designed royal emblem which mark their beloved King's 80th birthday lined on the streets in central Bangkok Sunday afternoon to witness a dress parade as the centerpiece of a series of celebrations.
The dress parade was held, as usual, at the Royal Plaza in central Bangkok, three days before the birthday of King Bhumipol Adulyadej on Dec. 5, Thursday.
The ceremony began with performances that display Thai traditional culture, including a parade of the "elephant knights" resembling those in ancient war time, led by a rare white elephant, which is auspicious in Thai culture.
The Royal Guards in colorful ceremonial uniforms, led by the Thai Royal Armed Forces Supreme Commander and the commanders-in-chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air forces, then swore loyalty to the King, accompanied by Queen Sirikit, before marching to receive inspection of the monarch.
King Bhumibol has been in reign for 61 years, making him the longest reigning monarch in the world.
The King was admitted to a Bangkok hospital in mid-October after experiencing weakness on the right side of his body, which doctors said was resulted from an inadequate blood flow in the brain, and stayed for nearly a month before discharged. The long stay has aroused great concern of the public about the health of the King, who has been highly-revered in the country. Source: Xinhua
