The voter turnout at the elections of Russia's State Duma, the lower house of parliament, has exceeded 50 percent and is expected to reach a new high in many years, elections watchdog chief said on Sunday.
"Russians are being more active voters in 2007 than at previous elections, and we expect the turnout to exceed 60 percent for the first time in many years," Interfax news agency quoted Central Election Commission (CEC) chairman Vladimir Churov as saying.
By 5:00 p.m. Moscow time (1400 GMT), some 55 percent of the 108 million eligible voters have dropped ballots, CEC figures showed.
The elections kicked off as early as Saturday night Moscow time in Russia's far eastern regions. The last polling stations on the country's territory, which spans over 11 time zones, will close at1800 GMT on Sunday. Source: Xinhua
