European Parliament President Hans-Gert Poettering condemned here on Sunday attacks by Spain's terrorist organization ETA.

His condemnation came one day after ETA shot two guards from the Spanish security forces in Capbreton, France.

The attack left a 24-year-old guard dead and the other seriously injured.

"I am shocked by the murderous attack," he said in a statement, extending his "deep sadness and profound sympathy to the families and friends of the victims."

"I want also to express my solidarity with the Spanish people, their authorities and democratic institutions and in particular with their security forces," Poettering added.

He said that the European Parliament "unequivocally condemns the use of violence."

"Terrorism must be defeated by using all means available under the rule of Law. Terrorist threats will never subdue democracy," concluded the EP president.
