The Fair Russia party, which is believed to enter the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, following Sunday's elections, will propose to extend presidential terms, party leader Sergei Mironov has said.
"We are ready to come up with the legislative initiative to increase a president's term in office from the current four to five years, or possibly to seven years, and we are ready to discuss the issue in the State Duma," Interfax news agency quoted Mironov, also speaker of the Federation Council, the upper house of parliament, as saying on Sunday.
The Fair Russia has won more than eight percent of ballots, clearing the seven percent threshold to get seats in the State Duma, according to preliminary results.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to step down after next March's president election due to constitutional ban on a third consecutive term. But he also vowed to play his role and serve the country even after stepping down.
